Educating Rita (Well Passion Actually!)

Over the winter months since being broken in early in November 2007 we have been educating Passion. She is also known as Babycakes to us who know  and love her best!
During December Passion went out on several day rides to Talgarth and Cwmdu before Christmas. Then on Boxing Day Rowena took her out hunting from Brecon and she was a perfect lady. As she behaved so impeccably she then went out on the New Year’s Day Hunt from the Bear in Crickhowell with Emily. Finally to prove that this was no fluke she was out once again at the meet that we held at Cwmfforest on January the 9th with Rowena.

As Passion is such a star we are hoping to educate her to ‘Tush’ i.e. pull logs in the forest as well as pull a carriage which we are yet to get for her… Watch this space, we’ve got a job for her soon…

Sold Horses

Since Christmas we have reduced the number of our horses by 4 in preparation for the new wave of foals due to be born in April and May. They are mentioned below…

Trefor

Trefor has been on loan to Jane Anscombe since last April when her other horse Bart was unsound. You’ll remember Jane as being Paul’s girlfriend back in the late 90’s. They came up to Cwmfforest for the weekend of the 15th – 27th of January from Carmarthen. Jane moved back to West Wales where her parents live and is currently working for the State Veterinary Service there. After being vetted by Equine veterinary expert Rod Fisher of Abbey Veterinary Group in Abergavenny Jane took the plunge and bought Trefor. We wish them many years of fun together… Trefor is only just 6 years old so will just about see Jane out…

The only picture I have of Trefor with Myfanwy.

Ace

Many of you will not recall Ace as he has spent the past 20 months or so at Hartpury College near Gloucester. However he has built up a very firm fan base there and will be sorely missed by the college! Those of you who did meet him at Cwmfforest back in 2006 when he was just broken in with Murphy will remember that he had a lovely temperament and was a very comfortable ride…

Anyway he has gone to do all Pony Club and Riding Club duties for 12 year old Joanne Janes who lives in Marlborough. We are sure that they will develop a brilliant partnership over the coming years bearing in mind that Ace is still only just 7 this year…

Obituary

Fudge & Idris

With great sadness we had to say goodbye to two of the oldest and longest serving horses at Cwmfforest in the forms of Fudge and Idris. According to Fudge’s Passport he was born the same year as Paul (1970!) while Idris was from the Queen’s Silver Jubilee year! Both of them had been retired for the past 5 years and recently had had difficulty keeping weight on even with their rugs on throughout the winter. As their teeth were worn out they were no longer able to keep condition and so the difficult decision was made to say goodbye to them towards the end of January 2008. They were some of our guests favourite horses in their time and I am sure that a few of you will be sad to hear of their passing and maybe send in photos or your memories of them.

Former Cwmfforest Horses

We have had news about several horses that we have recently sold including one horse called TB who is now in the capable (!) hands of Madonna! No photos as yet… I think it needs a bit of snooping on Google to get it right!

Gwenny (Sold Mid November 2007)

Gwenny went up to her new home chez Amy and Gerry Stroud on their dairy farm in Leicestershire on what was just about the wettest and most windy day of the winter on Sunday the 18th of November 2007. She has been doing plenty of dressage and other good stuff while Amy hasn’t been in Canada…

Tecwyn (AKA TT2 3B3)
We have also heard that Tecwyn has won over Denise & Adrian Smith in Leicestershire and back in December Denise wrote to us to say:

‘Hi Paul,

I thought I'd get in touch to let you know how Tecwyn's doing, but first I have to thank you for selling me the best horse I've ever had and ever will have. He's got a home here with me for the rest of his life; I wouldn't swap him for the world.

He can be a bit of a wus when he wants to be, snorting at silly little things, then so brave when a huge lorry is virtually sitting on his tail.’

Some recommendation indeed!

Willy Nilly (Sold September 2007)

Willy Nilly travelled over to East Essex to live with Dan and Marianne Wood on the 30th of September 2007. Stuey and Paul delivered 5 horses off to Hartpury on the way including Snip, Peter, Max, Pugh and Charlie. Willy had a shower and resumed his journey arriving bright and well in the dark. As you can see from the  photos sent in by Marianne & Dan he loves the flatness of Essex and also his pal Harvey who he looks after in the paddock when they go out…

Family News

Paul & Emily

Paul and Emily took a skiing holiday in Zermatt under the Matterhorn in the middle of January to see if they couldn’t kick the winter blues… The weather was gorgeous with blue skies throughout although there was a dump of snow 1 night. The job was a good one and they both came back healthy and certainly met some great new folks who they are trying to persuade down to Cwmfforest in the spring.

Paul finally passed his C & E Arctic Truck driving test at the 3rd (I think it was!) attempt on Wednesday the 20th of February in Pontypool after throwing way too much money at the project which was meant to only be a winter deal in order to earn a little money during the slow months of December, January and February for the riding business… So it looks like he’ll have to wait until next winter to start paying the costs back… unless any of you know of a good trucking job to send him off to…

Tim & Theo

As you might expect of the two little terrors Tim and Theo they are growing up fast! Tim is coming up 3 years old while Theo is trying to keep up with his bigger bullying brother… He was walking before he was a year old being his brothers tail at all times!
