Spring 2007 Newsletter

Brian, the second foal of 2007

Winter at Cwmfforest has been rather a damp affair, but April saw an end to that and we have had gorgeous weather throughout.  This has meant that the horses were turned out a month earlier than normal, much to their delight!

Horse News
We acquired a new horse for the summer who is proving to be a lovely chap.  Soil is a 17.2hh TB x Irish Draught and is having no trouble fitting in to our herd and in navigating our trails.  PTT & TT2 were sold in March so we have now got Trefor and Myfanwy online to take their places.   We also sold a lovely little palomino mare called Gem (2002 foal out of Nicole) who was in foal for the first time to Eddie.  We were updated by Dawn that Gem had a little chestnut colt at the beginning of May.

So far this spring we have seen Rosie, Nicole & Lizzie have colts and Polly & Flier have fillies, unfortunately Polly's foal never survived.  We contacted the National Foal Bank who put us in touch with another breeder that had problems.  As a result Polly went to  Worcester to be a foster mum for a TB foal who's mum was put down after foaling complications.  Polly and her new foal have bonded well and she is happily living a life of luxury care of Mr & Mrs Chug and their TB stud. We still have 2 mares to foal, so we need your help thinking up good names for all the lovely new ones.  So far we temporarily named Nicole's colt, Monty; Rosie's colt, Brian (he is the friendliest foal ever and we adore him) and Flier's filly, Flying Lochlan or Lochy for short (sire was called Lochlan).

Gwenny, Butch and the gang are still at Harpury, but will be returning shortly to take their places along with the rest of the working herd.

Ogmore, Hector, Tristan, Pumpkin, Max and Boyo returned in March from their winter holiday.  We are glad to tell you that Oggie has got over his bout of lameness that seen him enjoy nearly a years holiday.  He is back in work and really keen (still likes to bite bums thou!!!!).

The TB x we bought at the Cob sales last year is now being broken in steadily.  Frankie is going well on the lunge and under saddle in the school.  He has however shown a bit of spirit by depositing first Julie & then Paul, luckily the school has a soft(ish) landing!  We have ridden him out a few times with a larger ride and he is going well.

Pet News
Eltrix has got himself into a bit of bother with our neighbours with his sheep chasing antics, so is now on a lead for the foreseeable future unless we can find a way to cure his habit.  Any suggestions are gladly welcomed.  He is recovering from a bout of poisoning which seen him out of action for a day or so, but seems to be getting better and up to his usual (non-sheep chasing) mischief.

Trix doesn't quite get the concept of camouflage!!

Pip (dog, not person) is now a shadow of her former self after being put on a strict low fat diet by Jane.  She now looks amazing, although we don't see much of her at the moment.  Pip and Eltrix look very similar these days, although Trix has longer legs.

Family News
There has Not a great deal being happening in the Turner clan of late.  Pip, Owain and the boys spent 2 weeks in Sweden over Easter.  M & M went off for 3 days in their motor home in April and then took it all the way to Scotland for Mike & Anny's wedding in May.  Randal comes down form Chester about once a month and spends the weekend at the farm.  Julz was due to start her HGV course in May, but this was cancelled due to an oversight, she starts her course now in June so hopefully things will go without too much drama!!  Paul has been busy as ever and spent 2 weeks over in Germany in March at Equitana, a large horse fair, where he manned a trade stand and brushed up on his german vocabulary.

Friend News
Annie (Walsh) & Frank are moving over to Belgium at the end of May.  We wish them all the best with their move and look forwards to visiting them and the kids once they settle in.

A big congratulations to Mike Davies and Anny who tied the knot up in Scotland a few weeks ago.  Mike, Maria & Randal attended their wedding.

Trail news
Our trails are shaping up nicely for the summer.  Tanaka and his Japanese group enjoyed a week of great weather whilst riding on the Hay Triangle.  They also took park in some TREC training, but we decided it best not to send them off alone in a foreign country with only a map for guidance.

Our first TWT of the season got underway in a rather damp fashion.  Poor Row drew the short straw and took them on the first day in torrential rain.  Weather then cheered up for Julz who took the Monday ride to Builth where they all enjoyed a glorious day only for it to rain when Paul took the helm on Tuesday.  Hopefully they will have it dry for the rest of the week, fingers crossed.

We enjoyed the company of Cate Parker and her 'Chicks' when they spent a week on a Hen Party in May.  Fun was had all round especially as Madia had everyone in knots with her tales and quick wit!  We wish Cate all the best for her impending nuptials in June.

We still have spaces on most of our trails this summer so get booking and join in the fun at Cwmfforest!
