The Hay Triangle Trail

This is a 3 day trail running Tues - Fri only during National Park Trail weeks.

This challenging and exciting holiday is a three day trail ride, beginning and ending at Cwmfforest - our base in the Black Mountains. It travels along the northern escarpment of the Black Mountains to Hay-on-Wye and is not suitable for novice riders.

Tuesday evening: Guests arrive at Cwmfforest Farm, settle in and meet the horses.

Wednesday: The trail to Hay begins with with an ascent over Rhiw Trumau and then down an old coach road to the Red Lion Inn at Llanbedr for lunchAfter lunch we follow a valley path in the shadow of Sugarloaf Mountain to Forest Coal Pit, then ride across Bryn Arw finishing the day at the Skirrid Inn, the oldest pub in Wales, near Abergavenny. The horses are turned out, and a cup of tea and slice of delicious cake awaits tired riders! Guests stay in a comfortable B&B, and dine at the Skirrid Inn.

Thursday: We ride up Hatteral Ridge on 6th Century King Offa’s Dyke path, earning glorious views of the green fields of Herefordshire in England to one side, and on the other the vastness of Wales and the Black Mountains. We may drop down into Herefordshire to visit the Goat Company farm where there is the chance to buy Angora clothes, blankets and rugs - don't miss out on a pair of mohair socks! We then ride up on to Black Hill before descending Hay Bluff and Cusop Dingle towards our bed (and field!) in Hay on Wye.

Friday: Friday's route in the Black Mountains takes us into the Wye Valley where  visit the Three Horseshoes in Felindre. After lunch the horses are keen to head back to Cwmfforest, and you will be treated to a sensational gallop across Felindre Common! After a cup of tea and a farewell to your horses, guests head home. (It is also possible to stay Friday night at the farm and leave on Saturday morning - please enquire if you would like to do this)

Our trails take us along commons where good canters can be had at all times of the year.

We can travel along the valley sides as well us straight up over the mountain on our sure-footed cob.

We gain great views on this ride from Hay Bluff and plenty of culture at Llanthony Abbey.

Until... eventually we make it back home through the centre of the Black Mountains again.
